Pipe Freezing

Pipe Freezing is a safe and effective method of isolating a pipeline without any physical intrusion. Instead of shutting down the system or draining it completely, a secure ice plug is created inside the pipe, strong enough to hold back the product and withstand pressures of over 40 bar.

The process involves fitting a specialised jacket around the pipe, which is then filled with liquid nitrogen from pressurised tanks or dewars. The liquid nitrogen freezes the contents of the pipe from the outside in, forming a solid ice plug. Once in place, this plug provides a reliable temporary isolation point, allowing maintenance, repairs, or modifications to be carried out without draining the system or interrupting service.

This technique is widely recognised as a fast, low-cost alternative to system drain-downs and is especially valuable in sensitive environments where downtime must be avoided. From hospitals and data centres to commercial and industrial sites, pipe freezing minimises disruption while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Benefits of Pipe Freezing:

  • Provides secure temporary isolation without draining or shutdown

  • Handles pressures above 40 bar

  • Fast, safe, and cost-effective solution

  • Minimises disruption to critical operations

  • Ideal for hospitals, data centres, and commercial facilities
